We provide mining reports and property search services and deal with historic property, legal/land ownership enquiries.
We manage the effects of past coal mining in order to promote public safety and safeguard the landscape - now and for future generations.
If you need to carry out investigations, disturb the Authority’s coal interests or perform deep drilling through coal for other purposes, then you will need to apply for a permit to enter our property. Licences are required for the mining of or exploration for coal, underground coal gasification, incidental coal recovery and exploration and exploration/exploitation of coal methane.
We are a consultee in the Development Plans and Development Management processes to ensure that full consideration is given to safe, sustainable development regarding the risks from the legacy of coal mining and the future exploitation of coal resources.
We have contracts in place with a variety of third party organisations to support our operational activities.
We maintain and provide access to the information and data that comprises the national coal mining database, including coal abandonment plans, the Coal Holdings Register and the Licence Register.
Following a report by OPSI, the Coal Authority has been verified as IFTS accredited.
