Web Mapping Services (WMS)

Datasets contained within our Interactive Map Viewer are also available as web mapping services (WMS).  This is an open format that can be used within Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, allowing this data to be analysed against your own Geographic Information data.

This data is provided free of charge for Non-Commercial Use under the terms and conditions of the Open Government Licence.  Please be aware that this data represents a snap shot in time taken from the dynamic, national coal mining database.

Coal Mining Areas

This web mapping service contains historic and active coal mining areas and is the area in which we would recommend a coal mining report.  It is not a depiction of the extent of the UK coalfield.

  • Enter the address below into your WMS client (tip: right click and copy shortcut).

http://mapapps2.bgs.ac.uk/ArcGIS/services/CoalAuthority/coalauthority_coalfield_consultation/MapServer/WMSServer?

  • The service supports the British National Grid, Lat/Long WGS84 and Web Mercator coordinate systems
  • The data is visible at all scales

Development Risk Areas and Coal Resource Areas

This web mapping service contains a combination of data layers that are relevant to Planners, Planning Policy Officers and Asset Managers.

  • Enter the address below into your WMS client (tip: right click and copy shortcut).

http://mapapps2.bgs.ac.uk/ArcGIS/services/CoalAuthority/coalauthority_planning_policy/MapServer/WMSServer?

  • The service supports the British National Grid, Lat/Long WGS84 and Web Mercator coordinate systems.
  • The data layers within this web mapping service can be viewed at all scales, however due to the scale at which the data has been captured we would strongly recommend viewing this data between 1:25000 and 1:100000 scales.

This data was extracted from our corporate information systems on 21st October 2011.
